The Mystery and Act of Naming

Just as in the case of Adam, today God still brings us people, things and situations and allows us to name it. We must be careful then what name we give a thing, for it was recorded in scriptures that 'what ever name Adam called it (the animal), that was the name thereof', Gen.2:18-20.

So God gives us the power to name whatever comes our way. Adam even named Eve, Gen.3:20. Some singles have named their spouses wrongly and ended up losing such to another. They name the one that is meant to be wife/husband 'girlfriend/boyfriend', years down the road, they're in regret. Some business personalities named certain opportunities 'waste of time', years down the road, they're in regret. Some children were wrongly named by their parents at birth and became a burden in adulthood. Remember 'Jabez'? 1Chron.4:9. You don't name a child in accordance with the circumstances surrounding your conception and delivery. The name of children must be got by revelation. All those in scripture thus named were a great impact in their generation.

Names in scripture charts the course of your life purpose or destiny as in the case of Abraham, Samson, John the Baptist, and so on. Next time you want to name a person, situation or thing, think deeply.
Likewise, we don't accept the name given us by the world from their myopic view of things, Is.54:17b. Remember, only God knows and sees all things, 2Chron.16:9a; Heb.4:12-13;  Ps.94:11.

Remember how Jesus Christ gathered his disciples and enquired of them what people say he is, then he got down to them and would love to know who they themselves view him to be, of course both they and the world had varied conflicting ideas of who he really was, except Peter who by 'revelation' said he is the 'Christ', now, that is the crust of the matter, yeah, the real deal, Matt.16:13-17

You need revelation to name things right. You must also be careful not to also by either commission or omission give a wrong name whether to a person, situation or thing as this has devastating effects that sometimes can not be undone, except in few cases as most people will relate to a person based on the name given him by the world.

Mariam named Moses wrongly at a time and was severely punished, Num.12:1-10. Hannah was wrongly named a drunk by the priest who didn't understand her plight. Jacob was wrongly named by his parents until God changed his name. I can go on and on.

We can name things verbally or in our minds. Your perception about something is a name. What is in a name? There is so much in a name. The Bible records that a good name is better than great wealth, Prov.22:1. Name gives you reputation which could be either good or bad. Good reputation in turn gives you integrity that can bring you before Kings.

As individuals we must strive to maintain a good name, never giving mixed signals that could result in people naming us wrongly, Prov.3:1-4.
